Washington AP reports the House voted 324 to 92 to cut a mass transit bill from 20 billion to 11 billion matching President Ford's request. The measure authorizes operating subsidies and new equipment funds, with similar Senate bills under consideration. Ford opposed operating subsidies as a congressman but urged halving the bill to curb the federal budget and inflation.
New York AP reports sugar refiners saw profits rise to record levels as supermarket sugar climbs from 79 cents to 2 dollars for a five pound bag. Refiner claim crop failures and global bidding create a tight supply while the US, importing much of its sugar, gains from higher margins.
