Deputy Sheriff Held In Shotgun Death Of Priest
A part time deputy sheriff described as an easy going good fellow was jailed on first degree murder charges in the shooting death of a white theology student and wounding of Father Richard Morrisroe near a rural grocery store. The suspect Tom Coleman, 55, surrendered and admitted the slaying after the incident ended civil rights arrests at Fort Deposit nearby. The student Jonathan Daniels, 27, and the priest were fired upon after release from the Lowndes County jail. Ruby Sales of Columbus, a witness, said they had stopped for food with the men.

Maryland Aide Urges End to State Convention Delegates
Annapolis AP A Maryland Assistant Attorney General proposed ending the election of state political convention delegates and giving their jobs to the Central Committee. The plan would have county central committee members elected for four years serve as delegates and would reduce a perceived futile office. The Legislature's Election Laws panel heard the idea amid debate on how to fix primary shifts from May to September. A second idea would elect delegates in the gubernatorial primary two years prior, but committee members rejected a costly special election option.

Reapportionment Doubts Hit Maryland Plan From Fred Eck County
Maryland lawmakers from Fredeck County spoke against a reapportionment plan approved by the Maryland Legislative Council for the General Assembly. Republicans and Democrats argued over population variance, with concerns the Senate would expand to 45 members across 24 districts and many districts would exceed the 15 percent variance standard. The governor may call a special session, but Attorney General Finan questioned plan legality under the one person one vote rule.
