Two Dead in Booze Clash in Winchester Kentucky Riot
Town and county authorities report a deadly clash in the streets of a temperate county town after the arrest of a bootlegger. Marshal AL G. Philpot, Deputy Sheriff Henry Reed, and special officer Joseph Shively were among the dead or injured as rising tensions and gunfire erupted when Reed and Shively demanded the prisoner be turned over. Carl Estix, the prisoner, and others were wounded as a result. Philpot, a known member of a historically feuding mountain family, was killed by a shot to the neck. Reed died en route to hospital. Estix perished at Irvine after a reported burst of violence. The incident follows long-standing feuds and marked law enforcement actions. Meanwhile, a Heights service tomorrow features Prof Chester G Clem and Prof Geo Edward Smith leading music with Dr. Testrick delivering a lecture on Seeing Things As They Are. Dr. Testrick, former member of the Pennsylvania Board of Education, will be hosted by Dr. Remsberg in Middletown with vocal solos and a band concert to follow.
