Sixteen people are feared drowned as the disaster struck during supper with many passengers in the cabin. Captain Jesse Bauer and pilot E E Peck swam ashore after the vessel settled on a reef. several inside escaped by jumping overboard or breaking through glass reportedly saving a few.
In Philadelphia at Point Breeze the benzine tank explosion set off a major fire. Three firemen died and about twenty were injured as ten tanks of benzine and petroleum burned. Damage to logs estimated around $500,000 as lightning sparked the blaze yesterday afternoon and the fire raged with no end in sight for days.

Pieces of a vessel bearing the name Neptune were found on Santa Rosa Island near Pensacola after a July storm. Neptune, Captain Zett off, sailed from Pensacola August 10 for Montevideo and was feared lost. In Akron, over 300 Stirling Boiler workers struck after a nonunion boilermaker was not discharged.
