Mazowiecki Emerges as Solidarity Ally to Lead Poland
Mazowiecki, linked to Solidarity since 1980, rises as the likely premier amid a Poland still under Communist party control structures. He helped organize support, advised strikers, and stood with Walesa during talks that legalized Solidarity and propelled democratic elections. The new government faces a party-dominated judiciary and vast party influence in management across the economy. The Soviets express concern but avoid direct interference while Warsaw Pact ties remain acknowledged.

Beck named Carroll County third circuit judge
Sen Ray Beck of Westminster has been appointed Carroll County's third circuit court judge by Gov Schaefer. The 50 year old Republican, in the state legislature since 1972 and former Senate minority whip since 1982, will stand election in 1990 to retain the post as Carroll and Baltimore counties seek more judges due to rising caseloads. The $82,000 position was approved by the General Assembly and replacement for Beck will be nominated by Republican committees in Carroll and Baltimore counties. Meanwhile Carver Apartments on Madison Street near South Frederick Elementary hosts a Saturday block party with local band R B 1, part of subsidized housing efforts by tenant councils and the Frederick housing authority.
