Revenues Up No Tax Hike Needed Next Year

Maryland Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein said if revenue trends hold the state can absorb a $43.5 million rise in general fund spending next year without a tax increase. A $27.3 million general fund surplus plus projected receipts and a rainy-day fund would total about $417.7 million for budgeting, supporting Gov. Tawes’s plan to balance the budget without a tax boost. The surplus was higher due to stronger tax collections and unspent funds, with revenue gains from federal tax changes and Viet Nam war effects cited as factors.
