Burkes comment on Soviet ballistic missile subs
Washington AP reports Adm. Arleigh Burke suggested the Soviets probably possess missile firing submarines, possibly both nuclear and conventional types, as the U S Navy continues Polaris program and plans a new carrier while Congress funds submarine warfare expansion. He cited a May Iceland sighting and noted uncertainty about ballistic versus air breathing missiles on the sub. The remark may spur renewed congressional focus on submarine warfare and naval budget decisions.

Navy aims to shift to carrier focus for defense needs
Burke told reporters the Navy would emphasize building a new carrier as carrier based aircraft will be required to counter limited aggression in regions where land based planes cannot operate against high performance adversaries. He noted many current carriers are aging and require replacement while building a carrier takes longer than antisubmarine gear, and carriers with their aircraft play a key role in antisubmarine warfare.
