The 40 hour week law excludes railroad workers. operating unions earn by trip or mileage while non-operating unions seek 48 hours pay for 40, with a seven cent hourly raise previously granted.
Rail unions clash over pay by engine size and hours
The Ave operating unions face a pay dispute. Engineers and firemen already earn more with bigger engines, while conductors trainmen and switchmen seek similar boosts. A 40 hour week compromise was proposed after an emergency board recommendation, but core demands tied to engine size were rejected. The strike threat involves about 250,000 members as switchmen ride a separate path.
