Frederick city corn packing plants have started night shifts amid frequent rains shaping a three week outlook into mid September. The late corn shows stress from wet conditions with small yields expected versus last year. Government takeaway remains uncertain while workers, many women, fill positions and night hours may extend two weeks.
A charge of assault and battery arising from a June warehouse fire at Richard F. Kline’s Water street site was dismissed for lack of evidence. Edward O. Godsey of East Patrick street was accused after Roy Baker, injured by the blaze, reportedly implicated him, but Baker later denied making such statements. No witness offered testimony to support the charge, and Godsey was freed after being jailed since late June. Defense attorney was Edwin F. Nikirk. State’s Attorney Patrick M. Schnauffer led the state case.
The CIO Aluminum Workers Union says its members urged a general strike in the war vital aluminum industry unless the War Labor Board reconsiders its wage increase ruling or President Roosevelt intervenes directly in the dispute.
Soviet forces counter attacked southwest of Stalingrad and reportedly forced a retreat, reoccupying a line while Germans wedged into Don bend defenses and crossed the Kuban River in the Krasnodar sector. Red Star said several firing points were destroyed as Russians regained miles near Kotelnikovski.
Authorities prepared this morning to dynamite a quarry near Sister's Hill in east Frederick to locate 17 year old William Otis Diggs who drowned Monday afternoon while swimming. State Game Warden E Lee Le Compte authorized the search after other methods failed. Police and county officials worked by two boats tracing the quarry bottom with an improvised 45 foot pole to plumb the depth as part of the ongoing effort.
Frederick Junior Chamber of Commerce holds its annual steak supper this evening at Wolfe's Den, Roger B. Wolfe's summer cottage near Yellow Springs. About 49 persons are expected, including John Murdock of Baltimore, president of the Maryland State Junior Chamber. If rain comes, the event will be postponed to Wednesday evening. Members meet at the Y. C. A. at 6.15 p.m. to share rides. supper around seven, with Mr. Wolfe presiding as steak fryer. A short business session is planned.
U S Army Air Forces announced another round of successful raids on Tobruk and Matruh on Aug 14 and 15, with heavy bombers setting fires on an Axis merchantman and bombarding Tobruk harbor installations. Medium bombers made their first strike on Matruh. No enemy fighters intercepted these missions as U S air forces expand in the Egyptian theater.
Thomas Summers of Maryland has been named to the Knights of Pythias Supreme Lodge finance committee for another two-year term. The national body, not meeting this year due to the war, met in Minneapolis to conduct its business. Summers, a Maryland representative, has now served on the committee for a third term while other national officers were installed and reshuffled, including Supreme Chancellor Ray Garver.
Augid Gambrill, supervisor at U. S. Emple farm placement, reported that recent rains imperilled tomato fields in Caroline County and neighboring areas. He visited multiple farms and observed indications of spoilage.
Air Marshal Arthur Harris of Bomber Command sent congratulations to Brig. Gen. Ira C. Esker chief of the US Bomber Command in Britain after Esker led Flying Fortresses on a raid into German occupied France. Harris praised the first all American raid and noted the success as a feather in his cap. Baker flew a plane named Yankee Doodle.
British bombers attacked Osnabrueck in north western Germany last night, targeting rail and industrial centers. Five RAF bombers are missing. allied forces also hit airfields in occupied territories, destroying one enemy bomber and shooting another down over Osnabrueck.
Miss Janet F. Walker, who came to Frederick last September as public health nursing supervisor for the Frederick County Health Department, announced her resignation to accept a teaching position in the School of Nursing at Catholic University, Washington, D C. Her resignation becomes effective September 1 and she will begin work as instructor in public health nursing on September 15. Walker, from Cleveland Ohio, previously supervised in Allegany County and holds a Master’s degree from Catholic University earned in 1939.
The Eire Information Bureau reports that Britons escaped from an interment camp at Curragh in County Kildare last night. Three of the escapees were recaptured, with details given by the bureau.
Melbourne reports that heavy sea battles around the Solomon Islands may become a decisive turning point in the battle for barrier bases north of Australia. An Allied victory hinges on keeping sea lanes open as American footholds grow, with Japan's ability to reinforce and threaten supply routes now the key contest in the South Pacific.
Washington on August 18 Senator Reynolds acknowledged reports that he and Mrs Reynolds are expecting a birth. He confirmed the pregnancy when asked, noting it as something he cannot deny. Mrs Reynolds, Evalyn McLean’s daughter, is 20 and the senator is 57, married to his fifth wife since 1941.
Cleveland Aug 18 seven persons were indicted by the U S grand jury, with several named as ringleaders in what the district attorney called one of the greatest white slave rings uncovered. FBI agents traced operations to Canton, Ohio, and found active links to New York City, Saratoga Springs and Glens Falls in New York, Meadville in Pennsylvania, Miami Florida, Little Rock Arkansas, and Cleveland, Lorain, Akron and Zanesville in Ohio.
Cannon fire in the skies off the southeast coast was heard this afternoon as an indication that German planes attempting to approach the coast had been intercepted by the RAF. The roar of high flying aircraft was audible in hazy skies.
