Frederick City and County Taxpayers League calls Steering Committee meeting for Tuesday at 8 p m in Winchester Hall East Church Street Frederick. Robert E Dailey Sr says the session will shape league role and ground rules for upcoming elections and inform taxpayers of future open meetings planning district files and strategy.
A power cut struck the southern Frederick area including Wyngate Feagaville and Buckeystown toward Ballenger feeder when both a regulator and a transformer failed at Potomac Edison South Frederick substation. The outage lasted 1 hour 45 minutes and was repaired by 12:45 a.m. by switching transformers.
The 1970-71 fall semester opens in early September with public schools starting September 8 for students and September 1 for teachers in in service and pre‑term prep. St Johns High and St Josephs High begin September 1 while Johns elementary starts September 2.
New York AP reports stock prices mixed in moderate trading. At 10 30 a m the Dow Jones average of 36 industrials slid 1.02 points to 709 82 as bids and prices moved across the market.
The LeBaron Russell Briggs, a Liberty ship loaded with 12,500 nerve gas rockets and rabbits, sailed 252 miles east of Cape Kennedy toward a planned 16,000 feet depth disposal. A court battle delayed disposal but Governor Kirk and the Environmental Defense Fund ended their injunction bid, allowing the mission to proceed with escort from a tug, destroyer escort Warlley, and the Coast Guard Mendotta.

Any person over 21 who has county residence six months and state residence one year before the general election may register with the Permanent Board of Registry in Winchester Hall.
State Police investigate a theft of $1,000 from Tony's Gulf Station on U.S. 15 near I-70 after breaking a glass pane. A second theft target, $100 from Mark Grillo's Clarke Place residence. Frederick youth Milton Eugene Jackson, 20, charged with breaking and entering, larceny, and receiving stolen goods after cash register theft at the Downtowner on North Market Street. Jackson found with about $10, stolen checks, and a stolen tape deck. bond $1,500. Magistrates Court August 19. Frederick County workers switch to a county wide telephone switchboard at Winchester Hall with the new number 663 8300 to reach most offices. Some offices keep direct lines, including Central Alarm 662 6333 and 663 4400, Register of Wills 663 3722, Scott Key Center 663 6811, and Commission on the Aging 663 6748. The Board of Education uses its own 863 9200 line for schools. Some offices like Montevue County Home, Sheriff, and Jail begin on old numbers but will connect to the switchboard soon. The system, installed by C P Telephone Co., also links to non switchboard offices and to the school board.
Fire calls reported in a 48 hour period ending at 10 am include auto, barn rekindle and electrical fires at locations CITY 912 MOTTER AVE Juniors and Uniteds, BAUGHMAN S LANE, E SOUTH STREET AND WIS INER STREET. Ambulance calls show Emergency 4 Routine 1.
Saigon AP dispatch reports the United States unleashed its Pacific air force of B52 bombers against a new northern Vietnam offensive. About 100 bombers from Guam Okinawa and Thailand dropped roughly 3000 tons on supply and staging areas near the Laotian border in a three hour strike.
Virginia Kirsch, a 21 year old Red Cross volunteer from Brookfield Ohio, was found stabbed to death in her Cu Chi billet near Saigon. The U S Command opened an inquiry and Gen Creighton Abrams expressed condolences to her parents Max and Grace Kirsch. Kirsch had arrived in Vietnam two weeks earlier on August 2 seeking to aid troops.
The Soviet Union launched an unmanned automatic interplanetary station Venus 7 to explore Venus. It entered an Earth orbit and then boosted toward Venus, reporting systems normal and a trajectory near the preset path. The mission follows prior Venus probes and notes Venus hot with no known life.
Explosion at the old Federal Office Building in Minneapolis damages the sturdy structure estimated at 500 800 dollars. A watchman Joseph Christy 63 was knocked unconscious but released after no internal injuries. The blast likely used twenty sticks of dynamite and shattered windows on nearby buildings. FBI and U S marshal officials investigated with no custody of suspects.
In Omaha Nebraska a booby trapped suitcase exploded in a vacant Near North Side house killing Officer Larry Menard and wounding seven others. Deputy Chief Glen Gates said eight officers initially responded to crank calls about a screaming woman and that Menard was closest to the device, dying instantly.
The five day Potomac River Festival in Brunswick ended with a music program led by the Catostones and a country contest awarding prizes to top bands and vocalists. A fashion show crowned the Potomac Festival Prince and Princess after a jousting event and a Ranger Hat visit. Earlier, a horse shoeing demonstration and a railroad tour rounded out the festival’s final day.
