Catoctin Park Reclaims Land From Ruin to Model for Conservation
Frank Mentzer, superintendent, envisions Catoctin Mountain Park as a national model for environmental conservation. The park, once degraded under New Deal programs, has been transformed through reforestation and recreation, with Camp Peniel to host NPS environmental programs. Mentzer seeks exhibits on past land use, including stills and charcoal hearths, plus a recreated preforest farm to show regional German mountain life. The area could draw millions and anchor a broader conservation effort near Washington and Baltimore.
