Coal Board Will Continue Work On Northwest Coal

Washington Aug 17 Federal officials said the federal coal distribution committee cannot yet declare the coal strike over and will maintain voluntary price agreements at least temporarily. Reopening Ohio and Pennsylvania mines is expected to ease lake transport problems, though rail and port facilities face strain. Officials monitor whether 250 carloads from Kentucky and West Virginia can move to lakes this week and 8000 next week, with Toledo and Sandusky port readiness crucial. Loadings last Monday reached 15 272 cars, down from weekly estimates due to rail delays. An Cleveland agreement between bituminous operators and United Mine Workers' reps could add about 4 million tons weekly, potentially lifting output toward 11.9 million tons if transport improves.
