Twenty Weeks Strike Ends Some Coal Miners Return

Cleveland Aug 17 for the first time in twenty weeks soft coal miners at scattered points in seven states were ordered to begin production. The move affects only a minority of the 430000 bituminous diggers who struck in March while union officials plan further peace talks with other operators. John L. Lewis predicted operators would accept the agreement and urged progress with anthracite negotiations. He claimed victory on the three main issues of the strike. District officials invited five operator meetings nationwide to conclude peace. Operators in Pennsylvania and Midwest regions are urged to meet union chiefs in upcoming sessions. Some nonunion operators in Western Pennsylvania vow to continue opposing the union, threatening to close mines rather than recognize it.
