Retirement of Rear Admiral Evans After Fifty Years Service
Washington notes the retirement of Rear Admiral Hobby Dungileon Evans "Fighting Bob" after forty five years of service. He earned fame from Fort Placer fire in the Civil War and commanded the great fleet around Cape Horn while being considered a potential vice admiral by Congress. Born Floyd County Vermont in 1846, Evans joined the Navy academy, fought for the Union, and rose to captain before becoming rear admiral in 1901. He is lauded for unifying the fleet and maintaining discipline loved by sailors.
