Probe of GM seat belts prompts safety complaint
The Center for Auto Safety urged the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to open a formal probe into GM door mounted belts used on 1987 to 1990 models after reports of eight crashes since 1988 involving ejections. The group claims defective design and latch problems. GM says belts meet standards and recommends locking doors. The NHTSA has up to 120 days to decide on an investigation.
