Mutation in CCR2 gene delays AIDS onset at Detrick
Scientists at Fort Detrick identify a common CCR2 mutation that slows HIV progression by up to four years in 10 to 15 percent of people across races. The study notes a second CCR5-related mutation linked to delayed infection, together accounting for about 30 percent of long term survivors. The findings suggest new paths for drug development and emphasize ancient genetic variation versus race specific mutation.

Hopkins donor settlement ends view dispute over farm bid
Johns Hopkins University and major donor Elizabeth Banks have resolved a dispute over farm land on Darnestown Road. A new agreement lets Banks keep a preferred vista while enabling Montgomery County to prepare land for a bio medical facility. Banks sold the 198 acre farm for 5 million in 1988, though valued at 830 million. The plan sets aside a 30 acre corner where Human Genome Sciences will build a center. County will clear trees and recontour land for construction.
