Block Off Half Of Cylinders To Save Gas During Wartime
Sun Oil engineers announce a wartime fuel saving method to reduce consumption by forcing passenger cars to run on half their cylinders. The process involves removing valve lifters on alternate cylinders, pinching spark plugs, and adjusting carburetors to limit fuel flow. Tests on eight cars show 33 miles per gallon with best operation around 30 to 35 mph, while noting some vibration at low speeds and potential gear shifting.

Jap Beetle Season End Near in Frederick County
County Agent Henry R. Shoemaker said the Japanese beetle season is nearly over with no extensive damage but a record infestation. About 1,950 traps operated this year are being dismantled while soil treatment and spore dust applied to 875 properties, including Baker Park, helped keep damage under control. Planting corn later reduced losses in heavily infested areas and soybeans suffered most. the beetles will still lay eggs, producing grubs that threaten roots. A gradual decline may take three to four years as the program's effects become evident.
