Cicadas to Sing in May Brood No 10 Expected
Frederick prepares for a large May cicada emergence as Brood No 10 of seven to ten year cicadas erupts from Maryland to parts of the East. Entomologist Robert A. Kemp notes males produce the sound by vibrating drumlike membranes, with waves of insects predicted to fill trees until mid June. He warns the population may gradually decline as woodland areas shrink.
