Philadelphia August 15 The Union Traction Company which runs all city streetcars is testing a ten hour day on its busiest line. Motormen and conductors sought shorter shifts with 20 cent hourly pay. Rumor says the company plans ten hours at 18 cents per hour though no confirmation is available.
Washington August 15 The report by Post Office Inspectors Little and Mayer clears Erie Postmaster Isador Schel of political activity charges. It says he never attempted a campaign and actions were within postal regulations. The department should take no further action. The postmaster admits some charges and denies others.
A masked robber stopped a Blue Mountain stage at Coon Hill north of North River, firing on a horse and robbing a lone man and his wife of $20 before rifling mail bags and express parcels. Passengers fled into the woods. a North Creek posse, aided by Adirondack guides, searched for the bandit through the rugged terrain.
Harrisburg Aug 15 Rival Philadelphia Democratic factions contend for floor seating as delegates. Charles J Reilly of Williamsport chosen temporary chairman. Judge Harman Yerkes named candidate for supreme court. Pattison and Guffey seek harmony amid contested seats and platform emphasis.
Virginia Democrats nominate Hon. A. J. Montague for governor by acclamation at the gubernatorial convention held in Norfolk. Col. George C. Cabell Jr. presented the name. Swanson withdrew. H. R. Pollard faced cool reception after denouncing free silver as a dead issue. Willard nominated for lieutenant governor as the event closed after midnight.
The Inter Ocean outlines a plan for a single major league next season with ten clubs. Potential presidents are James A Hart or Ban Johnson, with Ban Johnson or Hart as secretary and treasurer, and Andrew J. Freedman as board chair. Rival clubs Boston Chicago and Philadelphia would consolidate into a circuit including Boston New York Philadelphia Washington Baltimore or Providence or Brooklyn, plus Chicago Cincinnati Pittsburgh St. Louis Detroit. The Boston and Philadelphia clubs would play Sunday games.
After a 3 hour 40 minute drifting contest Columbia and Constitution gave up the race at Newport Rhode Island. They were towed back and will not restart today. Both yachts appeared evenly matched to the turning buoy distance as they head toward the Lar Mont event tomorrow.
Supreme Court Justice Franklin B Fort of New Jersey ruled in Long Branch that the Voorhees act targets gambling houses and illegitimate ventures, not saloons. Atlantic City saloonkeepers jubilant after the decision freeing Sunday closures ordered under the act.
Advices from Maryland counties say the peach crop will be very short this year. Growers expected about two thirds or more, but now it is conceded it may not reach one third. Excess rain caused fruit to rot on the trees, creating an unexpected shortage. In New York, Richard Crouse, a Seneca Indian, was honorably discharged from custody after being found justified in shooting Jesse Jamison on the Cattaraugus reservation. In Chicago, the Canadian yacht Invader won the Cup again, returning it to Canada with five challengers. In Baltimore, Hart’s suspension for assaulting an umpire was lifted within ten days, with a $25 fine, making him eligible to play again.
From Caracas dated August 10 reports tell of multiple clashes in Tachira between Castro forces and revolutionaries. Casualties include General Rosendo Madina and four colonels killed, with about 200 men wounded or dead. An August 8 encounter occurred at Las Cumbres with a second revolutionary force. Gunboat Machias sails from Norfolk to Del Rio with marines and supplies.
Brazilian expert Dr Caldas conducts yellow fever serum trials in Havana as the yellow fever commission supplies eight mosquitoes. Two bitten by carriers have developed symptoms while two other mosquitoes bite non immunes. Tests are observed with interest by experts. Other items report Tennessee floods Coal Creek inundation and bridge loss, rice fields flooded near New Orleans, a fatal horse kick in Oneonta, a pool room raid in New York, and Carbondale women killed crossing a bridge.
Pittsburg Aug 15. The steel strike shows dual gains with McKeesport Tube Works closed by strikers while Pulitzer mill in Pittsburgh reopens with non union labor and Crescent plant at Cleveland resumes. An Amalgamated lodge with 806 members formed in this city. Chicago workers refuse to strike as charters are revoked provoking laughter.
Secretary of State Leyden reports that only three constituent companies of the United States Steel Corporation have complied with Ohio foreign corporation laws. The American Steel and Wire Company, National Tube Company, and National Steel Company are authorized. The Federal Steel, American Tin Plate, and American Sheet Steel have not shown authorization to do business in Ohio. Also noted are labor movements in Lackawanna and Scranton regions with mine workers returning and car builders’ strike resolution.
