Saffir’s Hurricane Scale Born From Miami Flooding
In Coral Gables Herb Saffir and wife Sarah witnessed September floods after a hurricane. The disaster spurred his move from New York to Miami and a career shift into building codes. He later developed and coauthored the Saffir Sampson Hurricane Scale while studying UN efforts in 1969 to prevent hurricane damage to low-cost housing.
