Maryland eyes tougher drive without insurance crackdown
Maryland legislators push stronger enforcement of mandatory auto liability rules through the Insurance Verification Program FR-19. Delay and fines evolved from 100 dollars to 300 dollars for early days and up to 5 dollars per day later, boosting MAIF revenues and prompting calls to adjust funding splits with MVA. Leaders debate heavier penalties, funding shifts, and streamlining verification to curb uninsured motorist driving while avoiding political heat.

Arms dealer Tsakos linked to Iran sale and Gulf war plan
Basil Tsakos, a Greek arms broker in Washington, faces allegations of attempting to sell U.S. made attack helicopters to Iran amid a broader scheme tied to a proposed trans African oil pipeline. Intercepted cables suggest a $8.45 million price per Cobra helicopter, with profits estimated near $10 million, while payments would route through a European bank. The report also notes Tsakos’s wider suspected payoffs in Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan, and cites congressional attention to Iran linked groups.
