Draft resister jailed as court forum for opposition grows
Hartford AP report says Russell F. Ford, 19, of Chevy Chase Maryland, jailed after refusing to sign a 10000 non surety bond following arraignment on charges of dodging draft registration. He compares his protest to civil rights actions of the 1980s and 90s. Ford refuses bond, awaits trial potentially in fall, faces up to five years if convicted. Government cites about 7.98 million of 8.5 million registrants unregistered since 1980. Anti-registration activists claim higher noncompliance.
