Try To Trace Inspector's Identity in 1951 Gift Case
Baltimore chairman Rus sell H. McCain of the State Roads commission says no inquiry will trace the identity of a commission inspector who allegedly accepted a $30 gift from New York painting contractor Philip Vassilaros in 1951. McCain says such an inquiry would blacken innocent employees, and until Vassilaros names names no action will be taken. He calls painting jobs in Baltimore and surrounding counties perfectly satisfactory.

McCarthy Tax Debt Disputed by Washington Star
The Washington Evening Star reports internal revenue agents after an 18 month probe found Sen. McCarthy owes about 25000 in taxes. McCarthy denies any truth to the allegations calling it a libel and insists no additional taxes are owed. The IRS plans to present evidence and seek repayment plus interest if needed, with no fraud claim but questions over non taxable receipts and sketchy bookkeeping. Provisions could require showing sources of disputed funds, including contributions, to clear the tax burden. Also included are habeas corpus proceedings in Circuit Court over custody of Thomas Michael and the John Hanson Highway name for the Annapolis Washington Expressway.

Dots Dashes Arguments Seen in Governor Nomination Fight
EASTON final arguments were set in Circuit Court today in the case of the dots and dashes the unprecedented move whereby George P. Mahoney seeks to upset H C Byrd s apparent nomination as the Democratic candidate for governor. Judge Horney heard 41 of 108 polling place officials who might testify about marks on more than 250 Talbot County ballots Mahoney says should be thrown out. The marks include any thing on the ballot other than an exact X denoting the voter's choice. Dots dashes smears and other marks were discussed as possible voter created or official created. Mahoney lawyers pressed that the marks were made by voters. officials said they were not present when counted. Indelible pencils and rough boards were among suggested causes. The judge denied Byrd's request to let Byrd representatives challenge other ballots. If the ballots are invalid Mahoney would gain Talbot County unit votes and approach a statewide tally. Byrd would retain nomination on popular vote lead. Mahoney could pursue Queen Annes County actions. Final arguments covered 16 classifications of disputed marks. Judge Horney will decide which ballots may be counted or discarded. decision may come after the week and go to the Court of Appeals.
