Maryland CRP enrollment under 1 percent for farmland
Only 79 Maryland farmers with less than 1 percent of the state's highly erodible land have enrolled in the U S Department of Agriculture's Conservation Reserve Program since it began two years ago. Just 2 700 of 389 000 eligible acres are enrolled, far below national participation. Maryland lags behind neighboring states and faces potential loss of funding and pollution reduction benefits for the Chesapeake Bay due to low enrollment and 10 year minimum land inactivity commitments.
