Strike Averted as Rail Brotherhoods Accept Federal Mediation Offer
New York August 10 The threatened strike of 400000 railway employees was averted when the railroad brotherhoods accepted the mediation offer of the federal board of mediation and conciliation. A. B. Garretson said the acceptance was conditional on prompt good offices and the board prepared to convene separate talks with each side to reach a settlement. The national conference of railroad managers had rejected the men's demands, and the federal board agreed to mediate to resolve the dispute.
