Moments With The Muse And The Obscure Man’s Consolation
August scenes describe a drowsy stream and a silent orchard with summer scents fading into autumn. Poem lines by Drax Bowers paint a wistful summer memory as crickets lament the passing season. The second piece by Thomas F. Porren, printed in Boston Globe, contemplates humility, obscurity, and the idea that earth ultimately claims all.

Funerals for Mehrle Young and Thomas M Markell
Funeral services were held yesterday for Mehrle Austin Young at his parents’ home on North Market Street with Rev. M. L. Beard officiating. Pallbearers were cousins of the deceased, and interment was in Lutheran cemetery at Middletown. Also held was the funeral of Thomas M. Markell from his South Market Street residence, with Rev. Dixon and Rev. McMeen officiating. Mt. Olivet Cemetery Company directors attended, and interment followed at Mt. Olivet. An incident at St John’s Catholic church damaged its clock when a wire broke and a 1000-pound weight dropped, damaging cog wheels. Death of Judge Sloan Sparks Succeeding Judge F Williams
The death of Judge David W. Sloan of the Fourth Judicial District prompts rumors that Ferdinand Williams will be called by the Governor to serve until next year’s general election, with Williams named as a likely Democratic candidate. Republicans may nominate Robert R. Bonhannon, George A. Lee, or Benjamin A. Richmond, though Richmond may abstain due to his practice. Colonel Pearre may prefer Don Breese. Sloan belonged to multiple Masonic bodies and other fraternal orders, chaired the Second National Bank of Cumberland, and had interests in Austen and Newbury Coal and Coke. He married Mary I. Good in 1872 and left four children. In a separate note, J H Plogge of Longwoods describes a crow-deterrence method using cornucopia-shaped, adhesive funnels that trap crows and deter them after an initial bewildering experience.

Linwood Camp Meeting Attracts Thousands Near Pipe Creek
About 8000 people gathered at Linwood Camp near Pipe Creek Station on the Western Maryland Railroad. The event was mostly social, with under 30 percent attending grove services. Morning praise and prayer, a sermon by a prominent Church of God minister, afternoon children's service, and evening social and preaching. The Church of God dissociated itself years ago over refreshment traffic, which yesterday centered on ice cream and cheaper drinks. Fines have been levied on the meeting's promoter in past years.
