First American high wheel bicycle and its daredevil riders
Frederick County bike history recalls Col Albert A Pope's 1877 Columbia Manufacturing Co machine with a tall front wheel and small rear stabilizer. Riders mounted by vaulting, braked with a spoon arm, and faced frequent falls. Speeding cops chased the scorcher while roads and horses struggled with fast riders. A Columbia catalog from 1893 praised the bicycle as an excellent outdoor gymnasium for all ages and fitness levels.

Column recalls late 19th century cycling feats. Diamond Jim Brady ordered gold plated bicycles, Col. Pope and Tiffanys involved. Charles Murphy set speed lore behind a Long Island Rail Road train. Century rides and windbreaks marked early racing. Argentina reports 1977 exports 49 percent manufactured goods.
