Washington AP reports dock walkouts on the West Coast threaten to curb farm exports and sting net income for U.S. farmers. Palmby warns a Gulf ports strike could worsen earnings, while 1968-69 declines show export losses from $6.2B to $5.7B.
Los Angeles AP reports brown pelican reproduction in California rose to seven nests this spring, six more than last year, yet the Anacapa Island colony shows fragile eggshells. Officials note 600 nests but expect 800 to 1,000 young, with thin shells blamed on DDT.
In Abiquia New Mexico two Mexican wolves rescued at the Chest Ranch Museum after a visitor slipped barbiturate pills into their cage. A third wolf was bitten by a drugged relative and nearly bled out but all are responding to treatment. The animals are a Mexican wolf subspecies already listed as extinct in the wild.
A 12 year old Boy Scout Gerald Segalas Jr credited with saving two four year old boys locked inside an unused refrigerator in the Linds’ garage. The boys Troy Lind and Barry Green were treated at a hospital and released.
NASA released five vivid color photos from Apollo 15 showing astronauts David Scott and James Irwin on the Hadley Base lunar plain with the Falcon lander and the moon buggy. Doctors conducted an extra physical to monitor readjustment after weightlessness, noting minor fingernail bleeding but no safety concerns.
AFL-CIO Executive Council pledges support for across the board federal wage and price controls if President Nixon deems them needed to aid the economy. Meany says controls must cover wages and other costs to avoid economic chaos. Council urges release of 12 billion for public works and housing, full funding of social programs, and raise minimum wage to at least two dollars an hour. Charleston is the capital of West Virginia.
