Prices and rationing talk dominates Congress debate in House
Congress debates price and wage controls amid Truman administration plans for defense output powers. A discretionary plan passes House committee with limited curbs and a trigger-free approach. Senate action pending with similar measures, cut-off dates differ, and penalties for evasion loom. Hog market report notes prices up to 2710 per hundredweight at Woodsboro sale. The Russia name etymology note closes the item.

Batory Rescues Seaplane Pilot Off Atlantic Course
The Polish liner Batory picked up a seaplane pilot named William Jesse Newton of New York about 100 miles off the Atlantic coast. Officials questioned the landing as the ship heads to Southampton and Poland. The plane carried enough fuel for 285 miles and Newton claimed he mistook the liner for New York. Immigration and coast guard authorities investigated the incident amid prior scrutiny of the Batory following a 1949 bail-skipped escape.
