Frederick County Dairy Notes Warn of Severe Feed Shortage
The lack of rain this summer has cut feed crop yields across Frederick County. Pastures are sparse and summer annuals like sudan grass performed poorly, with corn for grain and silage WAY below normal. Drought advice urges extra grain, use of poor quality roughage, and avoiding cutting corn for silage if drought persists. Dr Wally Moline notes some corn may turn purplish from high leaf sugar, and to let green corn accumulate dry matter. Be cautious in grazing and grazing decisions for drought conditions.
