Fewer Women in Domestic Service Despite Overall Employment Rise
Census Bureau data covering 1930 to 1956 shows a 30 percent drop in women available for domestic work by 1950, even as women’s overall employment rose about 40 percent. In 1950, 15,752,820 American women were employed, up from roughly 12 million at the decade’s start, while male employment grew only about 6 million.
