Aim To Keep Turkey Mortality At Minimum
College Park Maryland August 9 Special effort by turkey growers this year to secure rapid growth and keep mortality to the minimum is urged by Dr Morley A Jull of the University of Maryland poultry department There will be a big demand for turkeys this year and since there are ceiling prices it is obvious that the more pounds of turkey meat produced from 100 pounds of feed consumed the greater will be the returns or profits The armed services need 10000000 pounds of turkeys during the next two months Dr dull states to send to the boys overseas for their Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners The American public is being asked not to consume turkeys until the needs of the armed services are supplied If rapid growth is obtained the birds will be well finished for market at about 26 weeks of age and should produce one pound of live turkey per 4 pounds of feed consumed A good alfalfa or succulent grass range promotes growth and reduces feed cost He also says giving the turkeys alternate range helps to keep down mortality from the dread blackhead diseases Roosts four or five feet high all on the same level are better than those 12 or 15 feet high
