A blast from an explosive filled Fiat killed 17 and injured 83 in Tarik Jedideh Beirut. Police corrected early death tolls, noting 110 pounds of explosives and a 25 year old woman suspect left the scene before detonation. Fire crews fought two-hours blaze. extensive damage to Al Bashaer building and nearby shops.
Frederick Cocoty seeks a discharge permit to send 10,000 gallons daily of treated wastewater from a Bennett Creek plant, between I 270 and Md 355, south of Urbana. Col. Mark Hoke retires after two years as Fort Detrick commander in Frederick where he grew up near the base. He led Army medical support abroad including Iran and Jonestown evacuations, and reflected on a career spanning from rifleman to medical logistics planner with the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He chose civilian life over a Pentagon return, citing family and opportunity.
Frederick County commissioners in July 1956 voted to place the new county health department on the Montevue Home site south of Rosemont Avenue. The 116 year old Montevue Home will be replaced by a 50,000 square foot facility, with funding hoped from state sources and construction planned in fiscal 1988 to 1989.
Frederick banker and civic leader Ross Myers died Wednesday at North Hampton Manor Nursing Home in Frederick at age 92. A longtime president of Fredericktown Bank and Trust Co from 1945 to 1958, he served on boards for Maryland governors, Frederick mayors, and institutions including Frederick Memorial Hospital and the C Burr Artz Library. Survived by a brother and a sister, services were to be held with visitation beginning at 3 p.m.
