University campus debate canceled amid anti communist dispute
A planned University of Maryland College Park campus debate on Communism was canceled after a governor’s spokesman said the state agency need not provide a forum for totalitarian doctrine. Australian lecturer Schwartz criticized the move, saying the debate would expose weaknesses of the Communist program. Frankfeld, the other participant, said he had not been officially informed of the cancellation.

Free discussion urged amid world crisis at college talk
In a 1944 College Park event Dr. Byrd pushed for more light and less heat from bigots as the world faced a crisis. He cited an attempt to censor an auditorium debate about communism after a Washington businessman group sought to sponsor it. The move was called not debatable and prompted cancellation of the permit. Also noted are a film screen test in Spain for Miss Douglas and a distress call from the Norwegian freighter Belfri in the North Atlantic with Coast Guard aid en route.
