In Dover Delaware Aug 8 farmers hailed a promising corn crop aided by drought relief from the west. A Pennypacker farm specimen near Dover stood 15 feet tall with stalks at 14 feet 8 inches towering above a store window. The corn originated from Judge Pennypacker's farm near Philadelphia.
Vice President Roosevelt and a Colorado Springs hunting party have not returned by yesterday noon after leaving Monday for a coyote hunt in El Paso county. The Cripple Creek trip is postponed to Friday.
The U S State Department asked the Navy for a warship to protect American interests as Panama unrest grows. The gunboat Machias was ordered to Colon to monitor the situation and prevent disruption of transit between Atlantic and Pacific routes. If insurgents strengthen beyond Colombia’s reach, Commander Sargent may land marines to ensure free communication.

Atlantic City Aug 8 President Gompers of the American Federation of Labor left for Washington and then Pittsburg. If the federation lends financial aid, the constitution limits assessments to 1 per cent per capita per week for up to ten weeks to support a protracted strike or lockout. Federation membership is about 1,500,000. maximum aid would be roughly $150,000.

Ex Governor William A. Newell of New Jersey, born 1783, is dying at 83 in Allentown. The first Republican NJ governor served 1857 to 1860 and remained a public figure at Republican gatherings. A physician by training, he founded the U S Life Saving Service in 1843 and pushed the Agricultural Bureau. He also served in Congress 1847-49 and 1865-67 and led the Life Saving Service 1860-1864. He governed Washington Territory from 1876 to 1880.
The Resist encia Union shifted positions repeatedly as strikers stated they would arbitrate only if their leaders were returned. Citizens fear a drawn out wait as leaders appear beyond reach. Resistencia telegraphed Key West and New York seeking attorneys, but success remains uncertain.

In Coffee county near Enterprise Alabama a mob of about six hundred whites and Blacks burned John Wesley Pennington a Black man accused of assaulting Mrs J C Davis. Pennington pleaded for mercy as he tied in chains and screamed in pain. The incident followed a tense sequence of mob justice and racial violence across the state with other news items included such as a shooting of Captain Noble Wiley, home seekers ignoring land values laws near Lawton Oklahoma and other scattered reports from across the region.
Des Moines lawyer A B Cummins heads the Iowa Republican ticket as the party approves its platform. Chairman Weaver extols the administration and backs protection for American manufacturers, reciprocity, and a push for stronger shipping for U S goods. The platform endorses McKinley era policies, civil government in Puerto Rico and the Philippines, and Cuba policy while condemning Democratic efforts to disenfranchise voters on color lines. Cummins’ background is outlined, tracing his rise from Greene county Pennsylvania to Elkador and Des Moines, then law partner with J C Cummins.

Boston defeated Baltimore 10 to 5 in game one, Baltimore won game two 10 to 4. Detroit crushed Chicago 85 to 3, and Cleveland edged Milwaukee 5 to 4.
