Gov Glendening argues drought is severe but not the century’s worst. Meteorologist Doug LeComte cites Maryland’s 12 month rainfall at 30.52 inches from June 1998 to June 1999, placing July 1998 to June 1999 among the driest 12 month periods on record, with historical comparisons to 1930–32 and the 1960s.

Dan Lawton Frederick's Historic District Commission chair recused himself Friday as colleagues discussed his plan to renovate the Farmers Co-Operative building at 38 South St. He aims to relocate his distribution and data information business from Jefferson Pike Business Park to downtown. He said most concerns are minor but questioned if a quorum will exist for next week's vote. The plan calls for a new roof loading docks landscaping painting and a major cleanup. When completed he wants it to be something he is proud of.
A gas leak possibly feeding the pool heater caused a Friday explosion at the Embassy Suites Outdoor World hotel near Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Dozens were injured and at least one person severely burned as broken glass scattered through the area. General Manager Bill Bretches said the heater’s gas line is the likely cause.
