Maryland extends jobless benefits in special session
Maryland lawmakers approved a bill to continue the extended unemployment benefits for about 10,000 jobless workers after loss of the federal program. Gov. Harry Hughes and House Speaker Benjamin Cardin praised swift action while noting the measure addresses only a fraction of unemployment problems. The plan uses 55 million from the state unemployment trust fund and runs through next June. A future surcharge on employers may be needed to keep the fund solvent.
