Wheat Farmers to Decide on Marketing Quotas and Supports
Secretary Ezra Taft Benson issued a national wheat marketing quota prompting a referendum among farmers. The August 14 vote requires a two thirds yes to activate quotas, with 30 percent of parity supports if quotas pass and unchanged allotment rules. Wheat supply is about 52 percent above normal, driving the action. Farmers with over 15 acres of wheat or 200 bushels produced are eligible, and 1954 acreage allotments remain in place regardless of the referendum.
