The government plans civil and criminal action against five U S packers over cattle buying control. Indictments under anti trust law will be sought with grand jury in Chicago in about three weeks. Civil suits for hoarding also possible, as food prices rise and storage stocks show a 20 percent year over year increase.
Glenn Plumb of Chicago testified before the House Commerce Committee alleging a Wall Street driven plot led by Morgan and Rockefeller interests to plunder and nationalize railroads. He claimed a widespread system of highway and railway oppression, with states reassembling forces to plunder after Congress rehabilitated the railroads. He cited plans connected to wrecking the New Haven Chicago and Alton Rock Island and Frisco lines. Freight embargoes and delays were reported in several regions as shopmen strike actions impacted transportation.
Aug 7 1919 dispatches report Romanian forces crossed the Danube into Budapest and seized food supplies amid a toppled Hungarian cabinet and Archduke Joseph setting up a ministry. The Entente is expected to demand Bela Kun and other Soviet leaders’ surrender as the food situation is described as critical due to disrupted supply lines.
