Pipeline duel in Annapolis panel over eminent domain for coal slurry
In Room 140 of the Lowe House Office Building Annapolis Sen Art Dorman and Del Jerry Curran chair the Special Joint Committee on Pipeline Resources as they weigh a Maryland law to grant eminent domain to coal slurry pipelines drawing Western Maryland and West Virginia coal to Baltimore. Railroads oppose the plan arguing loss of business while BG&E PEPCO and VEPCO expect lower fuel charges passed to customers. Testimony depicts rail rate hikes since deregulation and a push by utilities to gain cheaper fuel paths amid growing demand for coal and potential 11 million ton slurry capacity, with defense from railroad advocate Frederic W Yocum Jr and clear support for deregulation under the Staggers Act by Thomas Till.
