House Votes To Retain Open Housing Provision
Washington AP The House defeated a Republican bid to remove the Open Housing provision from the 1966 Civil Rights Bill by a 198 to 179 vote. The provision would ban racial discrimination in sale or rental of about 40 percent of U.S. housing units, mostly apartments and developments, while single family homes would be exempt. House leaders plan to finish the omnibus bill and roll it to vote by Tuesday, with another push likely to strike Title IV. Few northern Democrats supported Moore Jr. in the anti Title IV effort, amid recent racial violence in some areas.
