Life Preservers Urged After Boat Drownings in Maryland
ANNAPOLIS AP Seven people crowded a 12 foot boat on Harris Creek near Neavitt in Talbert County July 17. The craft sank and three drowned including a four year old. No life preservers were on board. A second incident on Back Creek near Annapolis June 6 left one dead with eight aboard lacking life vests. Chief Inspector Hoy Rafter of the Tidewater Fisheries Commission warned boat owners to equip vessels with required devices as regulations mirror federal safety rules. For boats under 40 feet four devices are allowed: life preservers buoyant vests ring buoys and bouyant cushions. For boats 40. 85 feet devices are limited to life preservers and ring buoys.
