Government cuts down payments raise FHA loan interest
Congress authorized lower down payments and higher interest on FHA loans to spur home buying for middle and lower income families. New schedule sets 3 percent for the first 10 400, 15 percent on the next 6 000, and 20 percent over 16 000. Examples show substantial reductions from the old schedule. The move, plus new discount limits for FHA VA loans, aims to shift more mortgage funds to affordable homes without inflation. The FHA and VA will enforce reasonable discount and premium rules, while FNMA set new purchase prices for FHA and VA mortgages.
