Change Rules For House Buying

WASHINGTON AP reduced down payments and longer term mortgages for middle income homes were authorized by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board. Federally chartered savings and loan associations may make 50 year mortgages up to 265. The down payment would be 10 percent up to 25 000 and 20 percent on the excess over 25 000. The board also raised long term, low down payment lending limits. The move aims to spark about 8 billion in new housing with smaller payments and spreads as state and other lenders follow. For a $30 000 house a buyer puts up 3 .50 cash instead of 8 000 and gains five more years to pay. The measure targets conventional dwellings not FHA or VA insured or guaranteed.
