Tax collections far ahead of goals in 1943 totals
Baltimore reports 1943 state tax receipts reaching 107 million plus figures, showing substantial gains over earlier estimates. Sales and income taxes drive the surplus, with only 32 months of sales tax credited since July 1957, while overall collections exceed targets by nearly 58 million and reflect strong federal revenue trends. Governor Larne notes income tax gains offset declines elsewhere and calls a board meeting to review potential continuance. Fort Meade vacancy notice lists 75 reserve slots for returning World War II dead and duties at Fort Hasake Columbus.

Mentally unstable man faces suspended term in Walkersville case
A defendant in a Walkersville peace disturbance and Frederick assault case was deemed mentally unstable by two examining physicians. Magistrate Alton Bennett imposed a generally suspended sentence to the House of Correction, planning admission to the Veterans Administration Hospital at Perry Point for treatment. The sentence can be revoked if the defendant fails to complete treatment or misbehaves, with continued conduct to determine future confinement. The defendant, Alden Heffner of West Third Street, was kept in custody for ten days as attorneys argued. Additionally, a separate arrest in Frederick led to a not guilty verdict in a separate assault case involving Penny Stewart, colored, and ongoing drunkenness citations.
