Short Summer Pastures Keep Dairy Cattle Busy
J W Pou head of the Dairy Department at the University of Maryland notes that a 1200 pound cow producing 30 pounds of 4 percent milk needs about 100 pounds of good pasture to meet nutrient needs. He warns pastures may deteriorate in July to September heat and suggests grazing second growth hay fields or Sudan grass plus grass silage and hay as supplements. Rack feeding hay in pastures improves milk and condition, while dry hay is relished even on lush pasture. Lack of good grazing or supplemental roughage may cause production drops.

Automaker price rise requests filed with OPS
Washington reports Ford and Chrysler filed auto price increase applications with the Office of Price Stabilization under the new control law. Ford seeks 34 percent on Fords, 94 percent on the Lincoln, 84 percent on the Lincoln Cosmopolitan, and 4.85 percent on Mercury. Chrysler requests 9.67 percent on Plymouths, 9.18 percent on Chryslers, 9.52 percent on Dodges, and 9.74 percent on De Sotos, with no changes for the new 11-model line. Neither factorizes the recent four percent wage increase into costs. An amendment under the New Defense Production Act requires OPS to consider labor and material cost increases up to July 26. OPS says action on prices is not yet determined.
