Wilkesbarre Pa Aug 4 The Red Ash colliery strike may become a prolonged battle as 500 miners stay out for 12 days. Union leaders refuse to sanction their course or offer support and the strikers insist on reinstatement of a discharged worker and continued action. They present five grievances and demand wage and policy changes plus safer hours. Governor Brown injured in a bedroom fire caused by a canopy acting under a wind condition.
Washington reports Secretary Root has publicized papers on the glove contract with Lyon Littauer Brothers. The case, involving a member of Congress, is sent to the Department of Justice to determine if laws were violated and to pursue remedies. Inspector Garlington and Judge Advocate General Davis examined facts and recommended repayment and further testimony.
Philadelphia August 4 Charles M. E. Schwab president of United States Steel will resign as president and also as director severing all ties with the company The executive committee will recommend acceptance and successors are named W E B Corey named to assume active duties as Schwab’s successor but continuing the plant operations company-wide
Philadelphia August 4 A post office clerk Harry T Holland was arrested for robbing mail with a 43000 check and 86 in money. The check was his own from his father for a wedding gift to buy a home. Four one dollar bills marked by an inspector were stolen from a letter he carried. Confronted by two inspectors, he confessed and was held on $1000 bonds. Also reported: Cleveland declines politics and a fatal elevator accident in Harrisburg.
William Adair, a WV farmer and timber dealer, was shot by his wife after he fired three blanks at her at their Pigeon Creek home. She pursued him with a Winchester, he collapsed and died. She surrendered in Williamson and plans to claim self-defense, citing his intended violence.
Havana Aug 4 General Maximo Gomez chairman of the commission has completed a list of revolutionary soldiers entitled to pay. The list covers about 50 000 soldiers excluding civil employees and suggests the pending loan may cover about half the claims with balance paid by due bills with interest. Daily wage for privates is $1 during service with higher sums for sergeants officers and generals up to $20 000 for Gomez himself and $10 000 and up for many others.
Hartford City Indiana August 4 A 19 year old white invalid George Hershey was assaulted by two prowling Black men while hunting on his father’s farm. They tore his clothes and mutilated him with a knife. He escaped and alerted his father who summoned volunteers. About two hundred men searched farms and towns by telephones. no trace found. Sheriff Morisgal and deputies kept order to prevent lynching.
Cardinal Sarto was elected pope by the conclave on the seventh ballot and will be known as Pope Pius X. Giuseppe Sarto, born June 3, 1835 in Riese Treviso, has long served as Venice's patriarch and was made a cardinal by Leo XIII. The conclave's outcome pleased many. doctors attend Cardinal Herrera y Espinosa in Rome as other cardinals remain under care during the lull of the conclave events.
Aug 4 Atlantic Clus N J Third day convention of the Catholic Federation of Societies opened with a solemn requiem mass at St Nicholas Catholic Church in memory of Leo XIII. Right Rev Bishop Afessmer of Green Bay celebrated. Vicar General Fox preached on the late Ponts letter to President Minahan expressing regret at inability to attend the invitation and praising the society's social work and unification efforts. Theodore Roosevelt sent a letter commending the federation and wishing success.
