Heat blamed for 72 deaths in heat wave across Midwest
The heat wave now in its 17th day caused at least 72 deaths with no relief seen until Tuesday in Kansas and Missouri where nearly 400 fans were treated for heat illness at a baseball game. Alabama health officials issued a heat alert as authorities warned of dangerous conditions. Record highs were reported in multiple cities including Concordia Kansas, Kansas City Missouri, Columbia Missouri, Moline Illinois, and Sacramento California, while St. Louis saw 103 degrees. In Missouri investigators weigh heat as a factor in four weekend deaths. A 65-year-old woman died of heat stroke in Omaha Nebraska. Eleven musicians required treatment for heat exhaustion at the Drums Across America competition in Decatur Georgia.
