Twining Urges Cut of Old Style Armed Forces for Atomic Era
Air Force Gen. Nathan F. Twining told the Senate Airpower Subcommittee that the United States should shrink conventional forces and rely more on atomic weapons to lower defense costs. He warned that the nuclear era requires building forces around atomic weapons and that not all traditional forces can be maintained. Twining described a strategy focused on global and peripheral conflicts, with continued development of ICBMs, the nuclear bomber, chemical bomber, early warning systems, and guided missiles, noting a large 1958 budget request and higher needs for 1959 and 1960.
