August 1 as a warning day in war seasons
An opinion piece warns that August marks the loom of war for dictators. It cites 1914 and 1939 German aggressions and notes Russia’s actions with the pact and the Korea crisis as tests of world peace and the price of aggression. It argues the world hopes for restraint and peaceful outcomes despite volatile signs.

Doctors quit over socialized medicine threaten mass resignations
Britain faces potential mass resignations by about 20 000 family doctors who say socialized medicine has driven half their income through higher workloads. Each doctor must treat 4 000 registered patients yearly to earn about 7 200, a figure unchanged since 1948. They demand an independent body to set pay and arbitration by Sept 25. failure could leave patients without doctors and challenge the Labor government. Also, Rt. Rev. R. E. L. Strider, bishop of the West Virginia diocese, returned to Johns Hopkins after an eye cataract operation, but suffered a relapse and is improving.

In Washington the article argues the Communists benefit if the armistice lines shift north of the 38th parallel and a cease fire is declared without a political settlement. It critiques U N tactics, MacArthur’s late overture, and U S/UN officials for not backing a broader peace and withdrawal plan, while noting high costs and unresolved questions about Korea’s defense and future.
